Delegates at the New Democratic Party Convention in Edmonton have voted to remove Thomas Mulcair as leader and start a leadership election.
Delegates voted 52 to 48 percent to hold a leadership election.
Mr. Mulcair stated he would stay on as leader until his replacement is chosen.
The NDP constitution stipulates that the party hold a leadership review after every election.
The party constitution stipulates that the leader must achieve 50% + 1 to stay on as leader. Many speculated that Mr. Mulcair would require at least 70% support in order to confidently remain as leader. He achieved neither goal.
